Tips from Ngoni Madungwe, PhD

Being a great scientist is not a one day event, but a lifelong pursuit of constantly learning more. No cure has ever been discovered in a day. It takes a lot of trial and error, and error is a big part of how you learn. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The important part is that you use what you learn to keep trying.
-
Talk to people about what you are interested in, and do it with enthusiasm. Look for opportunities, like events and programs, to build relationships with people you can learn from and who are further along on their journey in the fields you're interested in. Strong relationships can help open doors you didn't even know existed, so don't be afraid to reach out to put yourself out there.

There are many different ways to accomplish a goal. If you want to help sick people, you don’t only have to be a doctor. There are other fields that will help you do the same thing, possibly in ways that you find are a better fit for you. Keep an open mind and keep trying new things until something clicks. And when you find something you feel passionate about, follow it relentlessly.
